I took one psychology class in college, and I learned about this guy, Abraham Maslow, as many of us are familiar with his hierarchy of needs. But as I sat there for four hours, the full afternoon, ing Maslow, I recognized something that is true of most leaders. One of the simplest facts in business is something that we often neglect, and that is that were all human. Each of us, no matter what our role is in business, has some hierarchy of needs in the workplace. So as I started ing more Maslow, what I started to realize is that Maslow, later in his life, wanted to take this hierarchy for the individual and apply it to the collective, to organizations and specifically to business. But unfortunately, he died prematurely in 1970, and so he wasnt really able to live that dream completely. So I realized in that dotcom crash that my role in life was to channel Abe Maslow. And thats what I did a few years ago when I took that five-level hierarchy of needs pyramid and turned it into what I call the transformation pyramid, which is survival, success and transformation. Its not just fundamental in business, its fundamental in life. And we started asking ourselves the questions about how we were actually addressing the higher needs, these transformational needs for our key employees in the company. These three levels of the hierarchy needs relate to the five levels of Maslows hierarchy of needs. But as we started asking ourselves about how we were addressing the higher needs of our employees and our customers, I realized we had no metrics. We had nothing that actually could tell us whether we were actually getting it right. 201401/274468While you are basking in the glow当你沉浸在你第一次of having won your first massively multiplayer thumb-wrestling game,赢得超级多人拇指摔跤比赛胜利的光荣中时lets do a quick recap on the positive emotions. I said ;massively multiplayer thumb-wrestling.;当我说超级多人拇指摔跤的时候You were like, ;What the hell is she talking about?;你大概会想:她到底在说什么?So I provoked a little curiosity.我引发了一些好奇心Creativity:创造力:it took creativity to solve the problem of getting all the thumbs into the node. Im reaching around and Im reaching up. So you used creativity. You are the people to whom my talk好。你们就是会发现我的演讲will be of practical value. The rest of you其他人,wont find my talk personally relevant,不会觉得我的演讲和你有切身的关系,but I think that you will still find the subject但我觉得你仍会发现这个主题fascinating. Im going to talk about growing older我要谈一谈在传统的社会里in traditional societies. This subject constitutes just one chapter这一主题是我新书的of my latest book, which compares一章,这本书在比较traditional, small, tribal societies传统上基于部落的小社会,with our large, modern societies,与我们现在的庞大社会之间,with respect to many topics在许多事情上都有很大不同,such as bringing up children,例如后代的培养,growing older, health, dealing with danger,老年问题,健康问题、危机处理,settling disputes, religion领土和宗教争端等,and speaking more than one language. Those tribal societies, which constituted这中小部落社会组织形式all human societies for most of human history,是人类漫长历史上最主要的社会形式,are far more diverse than are our modern,远比我们现代的,近代的大社会recent, big societies. All big societies that have governments,所有具有政府的,and where most people are strangers to each other,且大多数人互不认识的大社会,are inevitably similar to each other都不可避免地相互类似and different from tribal societies. Tribes constitute thousands of natural experiments部落的形成是大自然实验的结果in how to run a human society. They constitute experiments from which we ourselves在大自然的实验中,部落形成的过程中may be able to learn. Tribal societies shouldnt be scorned不应该认为部落社会as primitive and miserable,原始而悲惨的,并因此看不起它们but also they shouldnt be romanticized但也不应该觉得它们是as happy and peaceful. When we learn of tribal practices,当我们去了解部落的做法时,some of them will horrify us,有些做法会吓坏我们,but there are other tribal practices which,但也有其他部落的做法,when we hear about them,当我们听说时,we may admire and envy我们可能会觉得佩和羡慕and wonder whether we could adopt those practices并思考,是否我们自己,ourselves. Most old people in the U.S. end up living生活在美国的大多数老人,最终separately from their children都与子女分开生活and from most of their friends他们年轻时就认识的朋友们of their earlier years,也会相互分开,and often they live in separate retirements homes for the elderly,他们很可能生活在单独为老人设立的养老院里,whereas in traditional societies,而在传统社会中,older people instead live out their lives年纪大的人和他们的子女,among their children, their other relatives,他们的其他亲戚,and their lifelong friends. Nevertheless, the treatment of the elderly虽然,老年人的待遇varies enormously among traditional societies,在不同的传统社会间差别极大,from much worse to much better有比我们的现代社会糟糕很多的,than in our modern societies. At the worst extreme, many traditional societies在最坏的极端,许多传统社会get rid of their elderly通过以下四种一种比一种残忍的方式in one of four increasingly direct ways:来处理部落中的老年人:by neglecting their elderly第一种做法是忽略他们and not feeding or cleaning them until they die,不给他们吃的,不打理他们,任其自生自灭,or by abandoning them when the group moves,第二种做法是在整个群体迁移时,抛弃他们,or by encouraging older people to commit suicide,第三种做法是迫使老人自杀,or by killing older people. In which tribal societies do children到底是什么样的部落社会,abandon or kill their parents? It happens mainly under two conditions. One is in nomadic, hunter-gather societies一个情况是游牧部落,打猎和采摘为食的社会that often shift camp这些部落常常需要迁移,and that are physically incapable他们没有能力of transporting old people who cant walk带着无法自己迁移的老人,when the able-bodied younger people aly四肢健全的年轻人have to carry their young children要携带年幼的子女and all their physical possessions. The other condition is in societies另一种是生活在极端恶劣living in marginal or fluctuating environments,或极端不稳定环境中的部落,such as the Arctic or deserts,比如北极或沙漠,where there are periodic food shortages,这些地方有周期性的粮食短缺,and occasionally there just isnt enough food并且时不时的会有饥荒,to keep everyone alive. Whatever food is available has to be reserved这种情况下,食物必须for able-bodied adults and for children. To us Americans, it sounds horrible对我们美国人来说,这听起来非常可怕,to think of abandoning or killing想想抛弃或杀死your own sick wife or husband你自己生病的妻子或丈夫or elderly mother or father,或年迈的母亲或父亲,but what could those traditional societies但是,那些传统社会还可能do differently? They face a cruel situation of no choice. Their old people had to do it to their own parents,他们的老人都不得不对自己的父母做这样的事情,and the old people know并且老人们知道what now is going to happen to them. 201506/382294 But the idea that science can cure death但科学能够治愈死亡的观点is just one more chapter in the story只是神奇的灵丹妙药故事的of the magical elixir,又一个章节,a story that is as old as civilization. But betting everything on the idea of finding the elixir但把所有的赌注都压在寻找灵丹妙药and staying alive forever和长生不老上面is a risky strategy. When we look back through history当我们回顾整个历史at all those who have sought an elixir in the past,所有那些在过去寻找灵丹妙药的人the one thing they now have in common都有个共通点is that theyre all dead. So we need a backup plan, and exactly this kind of plan B所以我们需要个备用方案,精确讲叫B方案is what the second kind of immortality story offers,也就是第二类永生的故事,and thats resurrection. And it stays with the idea that I am this body,概念是我有这个身躯,I am this physical organism. It accepts that Im going to have to die我是会死去的but says, despite that,但不论这些,I can rise up and I can live again. In other words, I can do what Jesus did. and then he rose up and lived again. And the idea that we can all be resurrected to live again能够复活的这个概念is orthodox believe, not just for Christians不单源于东正教but also Jews and Muslims. But our desire to believe this story但我们渴望去相信这个故事is so deeply embedded是深植在我们的内心that we are reinventing it again而到了科学时代for the scientific age,我们又重新将它提了出来,for example, with the idea of cryonics. Thats the idea that when you die,意思是当你死后,you can have yourself frozen,你可以把自己冷冻起来,and then, at some point when technology然后,直到有一天,科技has advanced enough,高度发达的时候,you can be thawed out and repaired and revived你可以把自己解冻和修复and so resurrected. And so some people believe an omnipotent god并且有些人相信万能的神will resurrect them to live again,会人他们重新活过来,and other people believe an omnipotent scientist will do it. But for others, the whole idea of resurrection,但是对某些人,对复活的这个看法,of climbing out of the grave,从坟墓里爬出来,its just too much like a bad zombie movie. They find the body too messy, too unreliable他们发现自己的身躯腐朽,也不大可能复活,to guarantee eternal life,无法拥有永恒的生命,and so they set their hopes on the third,所有他们有第三类型的故事,more spiritual immortality story,更偏向于精神上的永生故事,the idea that we can leave our body behind就是我们能够离开我们的身躯and live on as a soul. Now, the majority of people on Earth目前,地球上绝大多数的人believe they have a soul,认为他们是有灵魂的,and the idea is central to many religions. But even though, in its current form,即便是这样,在现有的形式下,in its traditional form,在传统的形式下,the idea of the soul is still hugely popular,灵魂的观念依旧受到了广泛欢迎,nonetheless we are again在当今的数字化时代reinventing it for the digital age,再次提起它,for example with the idea比如that you can leave your body behind你可以离开你的身体by uploading your mind, your essence,你的心智,你的本质,the real you, onto a computer,真正的你,上传到了电脑中,and so live on as an avatar in the ether. But of course there are skeptics who say但是当然,有人会怀疑说if we look at the evidence of science,如果我们察看科学的依据,particularly neuroscience,特别是神经系统科学,it suggests that your mind,提及你的心智,your essence, the real you,你的本质,真正的你,is very much dependent on a particular part非常依赖你身体上一个特别的部分,of your body, that is, your brain. And such skeptics can find comfort这样的怀疑者in the fourth kind of immortality story,有着第四类型的永生的故事,and that is legacy,那就是遗传的传说。the idea that you can live on你可以长存在世through the echo you leave in the world,透过你遗留在世上的事物,like the great Greek warrior Achilles,就像古希腊战士阿基里斯,who sacrificed his life fighting at Troy他在特洛伊的战斗中牺牲了自己的生命so that he might win immortal fame. And the pursuit of fame is as widesp追求这样的名声从古至今and popular now as it ever was,都一样流行,and in our digital age,在当今的数字时代,its even easier to achieve. You dont need to be a great warrior like Achilles你不必要成为像阿基里斯这样的勇士or a great king or hero. All you need is an Internet connection and a funny cat. But some people prefer to leave a more tangible,但有些人希望留下后代----biological legacy -- children, for example. Or they like, they hope, to live on或是他们想要,希望as part of some greater whole,成为整个整体中的一部分活下去,a nation or a family or a tribe,一个名族,或者一个家庭或者一个部落,their gene pool. But again, there are skeptics但有人会怀疑who doubt whether legacy这些遗产是否really is immortality. Woody Allen, for example, who said,比如,伍迪·艾伦,曾说过,;I dont want to live on in the hearts of my countrymen.“我不想活在我同胞的心里。I want to live on in my apartment.;我想活在我的公寓里。“So those are the four所以那些都是四种basic kinds of immortality stories,基本的永生的故事,and Ive tried to give just some sense我试着说明这些故事of how theyre retold by each generation如何一代一代流传着with just slight variations但也都大同小异to fit the fashions of the day.以迎合当今时代的潮流。And the fact that they recur in this way,事实上这些故事不停的被传述,in such a similar form but in such different belief systems,在不同的信仰中有着相似的形式,suggests, I think,我觉得,that we should be skeptical of the truth我们应该对of any particular version of these stories.所有这些故事的真实性要有所怀疑,201507/384729诸暨市第三人民医院抽脂多少钱东阳人民妇幼保健医院激光除皱多少钱
