Todd: OK, Rebecca were talking about working in a restaurant. Now you became a chef. Can you talk about the process of becoming a chef? What do you do to get a job in a kitchen? Rebecca: Well, theres lots of different ways, but the most common way is to become an apprentice which means you go to the kitchen and work at the bottom level doing the basic chopping — boring jobs — for maybe two or three years, and then one day a week you go to school, a cooking school. Your employer pays for you to go to the school. You do get paid by your employer but its a really small wage, so, yeah. Otherwise, you can start at the bottom, like a dishwasher, and actually Australias most famous chef started that way. He just was a dishwasher and he slowly climbed up the ladder, so you can do it that way as well. Todd: So what about you? Did you go to cooking school? Rebecca: Yeah, I did, but actually I dropped out after awhile, so I did that for about a year but to be honest I think you get more experience in a kitchen. Sometimes the stuff they teach you at school is a little bit old-fashioned. Todd: How much actually of what you learn do you just learn on yourself, as just a creative process? Like how much do you think you learn by watching others and how much do you learn on your own, using your own creativity? Rebecca: I think both are really important. Actually, I learned a lot from my mother. When I was a kid, I used to watch her cooking all the time, and it wasnt until I grew up that I realized how much I understood about cooking just from seeing what she did in the kitchen, but also talking about how to do things with your colleagues I think is really important. Todd: Now, Im curious, you know how to cook, and everybody knows you know how to cook — family members and friends — so how... do you like to actually cook for family members and friends or is cooking a job that when you go home, you prefer not to cook for other people because its like bringing your work home? Rebecca: Well, I know some chefs that have nothing in their fridge and they hate cooking at home, but Im not like that. I really love cooking for people. Its really the nicest thing you can do for someone is to give them a lovely meal. The sad thing is actually that no one will ever cook for me, because theyre too scared. They always apologize before I even have a chance to eat it. ;Oh, its going to be terrible. Oh, youre a cook. Im sorry.; But actually I love food being cooked for me. I wish people would do it more. Todd: OK. Thats funny. Thanks Rebecca. 译文属 /201509/400159Daniel: So how about the weather in Argentina? Valeria: Well the weather in Argentina depends on the part of Argentina that we are talking about. Daniel: Uh-uh. Valeria: For instance, the north is very dry and extreme. Daniel: OK. Valeria: Like in summer, the temperature can go till forty, forty five and very dry. Daniel: Wow. Valeria: Right and you can have like minus zeros, minus zero temperatures in winter as well but very, very dry. We dont have El Nino and monsoon, this kind of things or rainy season. We dont have this kind of weather. Daniel: What happens when you get thunderstorms? What happens with the people? Do you like them? Do you get scared? Valeria: I think that if you are a kid, you get a little scared because you are not used to but if you are an adult you are cool. Daniel: OK. How about you? Valeria: I had a very bad experience that was like I experienced a twister when I was a kid. Daniel: Wow. Valeria: That was kind of unusual, very unusual in my country and so I get a little scared. Daniel: OK. I hope it doesnt really happen any more.

Exercise 3-6:Reading the SoundWhen you the following schwa paragraph, try clenching your teeth the first time.It wont sound completely natural, but it will get rid of all of the excess lip and jaw movement and force your tongue to work harder than usual.Remember that in speaking American English we dont move our lips much, and we talk though our teeth from far back in our throats.Im going to with my teeth clenched together and you follow along, holding your teeth together. What Must the Sun Above Wonder About? Some pundits proposed that the sun wonders unnecessarily about sundry and assorted conundrums. One cannot but speculate what can come of their proposal. It wasnt enough to trouble us, but it was done so underhandedly that hundreds of sun lovers rushed to the defense of their beloved sun.None of this was relevant on Monday, however, when the sun burned up the entire country.Pause the CD and What Must the Sun Above Wonder About? twice.Try it once with your teeth clenched the first time and normally the second time.4.
