例句-1:Ive been waiting for over a year to get a liquor license for my restaurant, and this guy comes along and gets one in two months. Im sure he must have paid the official under the table. How else could he have gotten one so fast? They should not have to compete under the table with kickbacks.******虽说under the table听上去在生意场上应该是由来已久了,但事实上,这个习惯用语最早出现于二十世纪二十年代,历史并不久远。 例句-2:I run a restaurant and I get a lot of young people asking me for part-time job as waiters, and they all want to be paid under the table, you know, cash. This way they can avoid paying taxes. Its easier for me because I dont have to put them in my books. 这也让我想起,很多墨西哥人为什么会愿意背井离乡到美国来打工,原因很简单,an American salary, even if below minimum wage and paid under the table, would be much higher than what they could earn at home. /201504/372373Joel: So, Mitchell, I only surfed for about a year and I never got very good at it. I wonder if you could explain how a beginner goes about learning how to surf. Mitchell: Well, thats a tough question because I was surfing ever since I was small so it came natural to me, surfing, but since I know I surf. The beginning is put your board in the sand, lay on your board on the sand, pretend that you are paddling and then push yourself up like a push-up and then stand. You repeat that over-and-over again and eventually you enter the water and you get a friend to hold the board for you and then you stand up in the water while your friend pushed the board to gain balance. Joel: The part I had the hardest time with was when there were big waves, it was so hard to get out far enough so that you could actually catch a wave. What do you call it, ;duck diving;? Mitchell: Duck diving, yeah, its key to surfing. If you see a wave, the thing is that you have to see the wave before it comes. Thats the secret, like wheres it crashing and when its crashing. We call it ;crashing; when its coming down. Duck diving, you put your knees on the board if its a big wave... 如果是一个大浪的话,那潜越时你要跪在冲浪板上……Joel: Oh, you get on your knees. Mitchell: You get on your hands and knees and you push the nose of the board down. Joel: OK, push the front part down. Mitchell: Yeah, and at the same time, after you push it down, you also kick your hips, and push with your hips, like how you dive in water, like a dolphin. Joel: OK, and then when the wave crashes over you, do you lay down on the board. Mitchell: You get back up. You pull your nose back up. Joel: OK, you pull the front and back, back up, and that helps you to back under the wave. And what about when youre... 那……Mitchell: But the key is, you dont want to duck dive when the wave is crashing on you because you are aly screwed. Joel: OK, you have to duck before the wave. Mitchell: Before the wave or when its crashing on you, like we call it white water. A lot of times you duck dive in white water. White water is when the wave crashes. The water looks like its all white like white cotton candy, so you duck dive underneath that. Joel: And when youre catching a wave, how do you know when to stand up? Mitchell: Like when the wave, when you see the wave coming you start paddling to get with the wave and before the wave even starts curling, youre aly getting y to stand up. It the wave is aly curling, and your standing up, its too late. Joel: Its too late. OK. So you have to stand up... 所以站立的时机是……Mitchell: Before it starts curling. Joel: I see. I see. Mitchell: And going the direction where its crashing. Joel: Well, Im going to have to go surfing with you sometime so I can have a private lesson. S: Welcome to Game World. Peter: So, Jana, you told me that youd been a student in three different countries and now youre teaching in Japan which is yet another different country. It sounds really interesting. Jana: Yeah, thats right. Well, I did my undergraduate degree in Prague, in the Czech Republic and as a part of that I did an exchange program in Madrid for one semester and after that I moved to Sydney in Australia and I did my masters there and now I teach in Japan. So, yeah, youre right. Peter: Wow, that sounds really interesting. Im curious about the student life in these different countries. Do you think there are big differences in these countries in terms of student life? Jana: Well, I havent been a student in Japan but I can sort of compare from my experience. Yeah, I think it is quite different. In Prague it was a very serious study environment sort of thing and a lot of my classmates were a bit older as well so they were like really interested in the subject they were studying and its more like autonomous learning. So everybody spends a lot of time in the library researching and ing and that sort of thing and the teachers were really good in their subjects but they were great experts but maybe they were not really good teachers. Peter: Right. Jana: So at that time I didnt really enjoy that environment. I felt its too advanced for me. I would have preferred some, a bit more guidance maybe. But, yeah, Sydney was different too because theres so many international students so it was a whole different experience, not just about study but meeting people from different countries. And I guess Japan and Spain might be a little bit similar in a way. Peter: Really? How come? Jana: I felt in Spain it was more teacher fronted style of teaching so students taking notes and perhaps not participating so much and I guess it depends on the student but maybe some of them were not that interested in the subject. Peter: I see. Jana: And its a similar kind of feeling I get in Japan. Peter: OK. How about studying in Sydney? Was that, in that way was it really different? Were people more active and participating students? Jana: I guess it depends on the student. Some students were more active than others but I suppose they were there by choice. You know, they wanted to experience studying in another country and expand their horizons so I think they were a bit more active. Peter: You said about that people in Prague were really serious students. How about the students in Spain and in Sydney, Australia? Jana: Right. Well in Spain I actually found it difficult to meet, to become friends with local students although you would think that, you might think that Spanish people are really friendly and open but actually it was quite difficult to get into the local life so I, most of my friends were other international students too to be honest. But I think they all had, you know, part time jobs and their own activities outside of school that they were interested in.
