But if you want to examine notes from White House meetings with foreign leaders, email from a Cabinet secretary, or look at photos taken by U.S. surveillance satellites… you can, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, which grants access to declassified government records. Millions of those documents are available at the National Security Archive, a private research group in Washington. Boxes filled with documents are stacked six shelves high in a storage room at the National Security Archive. These copies of government papers are only a small part of its collection, which also includes materials which can be viewed on the group’s website. The archive was started more than 25 years ago by a group of journalists and historians who used the Freedom of Information Act to get documents they needed for research. The act was passed by Congress in 1966 to make U.S. government agencies more accountable to the American public. However, some information is protected, including classified national defense or foreign policy materials, trade secrets and other confidential business information. Today, the archive collects materials on a variety of topics, analyzes the information and publishes books about what they've found. Director Tom Blanton says a retired spy even wrote part of his memoir using information from the archive. “So it’s an interesting hybrid of different functions, all meant to make the Freedom of Information Act idea come true in the toughest area, the most closed area of American government and that’s national security," said Blanton. Blanton says even when material is declassified, it can be difficult to get intelligence agencies to release sensitive information. With drums beating, schoolboys parading, and scores of people lining streets decked with Russian and Palestinian flags, the Russian leader's visit gave Palestinians a chance to show themselves as y for statehood. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed Medvedev to Jericho, where the two signed a number of cooperation agreements. He said Moscow supported and will support what he described as the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to an independent state with its capital in east Jerusalem. 201101/123845The solar system is a hostile place. Earth is under attack from deadly cosmic radiation. Life here is only possible because it is protected by the magnetosphere, an invisible force field that cocoons the planet. But new evidence reveals that this vital shield is weakening. A region above the south Atlantic is experiencing dangerous levels of radiation. Its earth loosing its magnetic shield. Its not a matter of if the earths magnetic field will disappear some day, its a matter of when. And what will happen to life if it does? Like a giant umbrella, earths magnetosphere shields us from the steady stream of cosmic radiation that fills our solar system. Exposure to this is deadly. The magnetic field coming out from earth makes a big bubble around the earth, the magnetosphere that protects us from the most violent actions of the sun. Many of the charge particles in the solar wind have enough energy so that they would represent a hazard to human beings if they made direct contact with the surface environment. If you are on the path that this oncoming charge particles zipping out from the sun, if you are not inside, some shielded, you are dead. Without the magnetosphere, all life is vulnerable to these high energy cosmic particles. They penetrate living tissue and cause severe damage to cells. As the field becomes weaker and weaker, the effects of the space radiation will be felt at lower and lower and progressively lower altitudes. So possibly one outcome of a reduced magnetic shield would be, through increased exposure radiation, higher rates of cancer among populations.

Not just in the far-off ages of surging sea levels following ice-age thaws, spikes in prehistoric temperatures correlated with natural releases of greenhouse gas and ancient civilisations brought low by drought, but in records from living memory—which are based on reliable measurements made at the time. Using such data researchers have now compiled an estimate of global changes in crop yields which can be put down to recent increases in temperature and decreases in rainfall (the world as a whole is getting wetter, but the rain has stayed away from some agricultural plains). The bad news is that they find that climate change has lowered the amount of maize (or corn, if you prefer) and wheat produced in a given area. The good news is that the effect is so far reasonably small.
