For a Chinese solar-equipment maker to default may seem like a rare sign of consolidation in an overcrowded sector. Yet don#39;t expect new light to shine on this industry. Shanghai Chaori Solar has become the first company of any stripe to default in China#39;s domestic bond market. That it was a solar company underscores Beijing#39;s desire to instill some market discipline in a bloated sector fueled by local government-funded companies who have kept making panels despite plummeting prices in recent years. Chaori#39;s default comes after rival Suntech failed. Investors are now turning to another panel-maker, Baoding Tianwei, which this week reported a second year of losses, to see if officials will let it fail. This consolidation is partly why panel prices stabilized last year, says CLSA#39;s Charles Yonts. Higher demand also helped, as China alone doubled its purchases of panels. The problem is prices may not rebound. Manufacturers are investing again, with leading panel-makers planning to increase supply by roughly 30% this year, according to NPD Solarbuzz. Global panel-making capacity should be roughly 60 gigawatts in 2014, more than two-thirds in China, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association forecast last year. That#39;s still too much, considering the world#39;s demand for new solar-generated power may just be 45 gigawatts in 2014, says Nomura. China now accounts for 30% of global demand, according to Mr. Yonts--and it doesn#39;t help that starting in January, the government cut by 10% the above-market price it pays utility-size solar farms in the provinces that previously bought most of the panels. These farms are far from the regions that need power and burden the transmission network. China is instead offering incentives to build roof-top installations, except that#39;s easier planned than done. It#39;s tough to secure ownership rights to rooftops or arrange financing, says Frank Haugwitz, an independent solar energy consultant. Other big markets aren#39;t looking promising either. Germany is cutting subsidies and Japan may follow suit, while the U.S. has set up trade barriers against China. That could explain why panel prices are down 4.4% since November, according to PVinsights. This bodes ill for China#39;s panel survivors who should otherwise benefit from their competitors going under. Trina Solar and Jinko Solar, who just started returning to profitability after many quarters of losses, are among the biggest panel players.PVinsights认为,这就是为何面板价格自去年11月以来累计下跌4.4%的原因。 Consolidation will only continue if Beijing can force local governments to cut production--and give up the jobs that go with it. That#39;s a tough sell as China#39;s economic growth weakens. Why do I exist? This isn#39;t a philosophical cri de coeur; it#39;s an evolutionary conundrum. At 58, I#39;m well past menopause, and yet I#39;ll soldier, on, with luck, for many years more. The conundrum is more vivid when you realize that human beings (and killer whales) are the only species where females outlive their fertility. Our closest primate relatives--chimpanzees, for example--usually die before their 50s, when they are still fertile. This isn#39;t just a miracle of modern medicine. Our human life expectancy is much longer than it used to be--but that#39;s because far fewer children die in infancy. Anthropologists have looked at life spans in hunter-gatherer and forager societies, which are like the societies we evolved in. If you make it past childhood, you have a good chance of making it into your 60s or 70s. It turns out that my existence may actually be the key to human nature. This isn#39;t a megalomaniacal boast but a new biological theory: the #39;grandmother hypothesis.#39; Twenty years ago, the anthropologist Kristen Hawkes at the University of Utah went to study the Hadza, a forager group in Africa, thinking that she would uncover the origins of hunting. But then she noticed the many wiry old women who dug roots and cooked dinners and took care of babies (much like me, though my root-digging skills are restricted to dividing the irises). It turned out that these old women played an important role in providing nutrition for the group, as much as the strapping young hunters. What#39;s more, those old women provided an absolutely crucial resource by taking care of their grandchildren. There are many controversies about what happened in human evolution. But there#39;s no debate that there were two dramatic changes in what biologists call our #39;life-history#39;: Besides living much longer than our primate relatives, our babies depend on adults for much longer. Young chimps gather as much food as they eat by the time they are 7 or so. But even in forager societies, human children pull their weight only when they are teenagers. Why would our babies be helpless for so long? That long immaturity helps make us so smart: It gives us a long protected time to grow large brains and to use those brains to learn about the world we live in. Human beings can learn to adapt to an exceptionally wide variety of environments, and those skills of learning and culture develop in the early years of life. But that immaturity has a cost. It means that biological mothers can#39;t keep babies going all by themselves: They need help. In forager societies grandmothers provide a substantial amount of child care as well as nutrition. Barry Hewlett at Washington State University and his colleagues found, much to their surprise, that grandmothers even shared breast-feeding with mothers. Some grandmoms just served as big pacifiers, but some, even after menopause, could #39;relactate,#39; actually producing milk. (Though I think I#39;ll stick to the high-tech, 21st-century version of helping to feed my 5-month-old granddaughter with electric pumps, freezers and bottles.) Dr. Hawkes#39;s #39;grandmother hypothesis#39; proposes that grandmotherhood developed in tandem with our long childhood. In fact, she argues that the evolution of grandmothers was exactly what allowed our long childhood, and the learning and culture that go with it, to emerge. In mathematical models, you can see what happens if, at first, just a few women live past menopause and use that time to support their grandchildren (who, of course, share their genes). The #39;grandmother trait#39; can rapidly take hold and sp. And the more grandmothers contribute, the longer the period of immaturity can be. So on Mother#39;s Day this Sunday, as we toast mothers over innumerable Bloody Marys and Eggs Benedicts across the country, we might add an additional toast for the gray-haired grandmoms behind the scenes.

Now, though, you can picture a fully electric bike with a digital display. The iconic American motorcycle manufacturer held an event in New York City Monday afternoon showing off Project LiveWire, a prototype of the company’s first electric motorcycle. LiveWire。The new bikes look mostly like a traditional motorcycle, with a few notable exceptions. There is a digital display in between the handlebars where speed and efficiency are displayed. Also, there is no clutch on the left handlebar, since there are no gears. The bike can go from zero to 60 in about 4 seconds, and can reach up to 92 m.p.h. It does not have the traditional loud Harley rev-up sound, though there is a slight hum from the electric engine starting. Harley President Matt Levatich said it would be a few years before the bikes were y to be manufactured and put on sale. In the meantime, it is still tweaking the design and listening to its customers. “We don’t have specific date,” he said. “We need time to incorporate that feedback.“我们还没有确定具体的日期,”他说。 It was a uniquely diverse crowd gathered at the Harley-Davidson HOG 0.00% dealership in Lower Manhattan — a near equal mix of buttoned-up journalists lumbering onto the LiveWire simulator (think a motorcycle stuck in place that can be “revved up” without actually going anywhere) and Harley-Davidson Riders Club Members, many of whom sported well-worn patched vests and beards that would give Rasputin a run for his money. One of those riders, Juan Marmol, said that the new bike ran great, though he was concerned about the relative short range of the bike on a single charge of its battery. The bike can only travel around 55 miles after a three hour charge. “It was awesome,” he said. “The biggest downfall to it right now based on what their telling us is the charge time.”“感觉很棒,”他说。 For hardcore Harley riders who sometimes go up to 400 miles a day, the current battery just wouldn’t work, Marmol said. But he did think that the new bike could change Harley-Davidson’s image and maybe bring some new people into the hog-riding family. “I believe this will change kind of the mindset that Harley’s are for old guys,” he said. Levatich agreed, also noting that Harley would not be forgetting its core customers who want old-fashioned motorcycles. “We’re absolutely not abandoning any of that,” he said. “We’re going to continue to invest in great traditional Harley-Davidson motorcycles. LiveWire has nothing to do with that. It’s all of that, plus opening the doors to some people that are maybe on the outside of the sport, on the outside of the brand.” Of course, Harley-Davidson isn’t the only motor cycle maker exploring electric bikes. In fact, Other companies such as Mission Motors have aly put their models on sale. Harley-Davidson’s roadshow will travel across the ed States this year and next in addition to going to Canada and Europe.
